The Houston corridor developed along a parallel track. Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhães, a coral belt who had opened the first Gracie Barra affiliate outside of Rio de Janeiro, eventually settled in Houston and built Gracie Barra Texas into one of the most productive instructor factories in North America — he has awarded more than 500 black belts over his career. His students have gone on to spread legitimate, high-level Jiu-Jitsu across the Gulf Coast region. The Alliance lineage also took root in Houston through Alliance BJJ Houston, giving the city representation from two of the sport's most respected organizations. San Antonio added another dimension through Rodrigo Pinheiro BJJ, which has been running since 2008, and Ohana Academy, a multi-location operation on the north side of the city with a serious curriculum that covers BJJ, wrestling, Muay Thai, and judo under professors Gabe, Manny, and Washington.

Geographically, the state breaks into distinct clusters. Houston has the deepest infrastructure — decades of Gracie Barra presence, a strong Alliance affiliate, and dozens of smaller lineage schools that trace back to Draculino or the Rilion Gracie line. The DFW metroplex carries the Machado legacy with schools throughout Carrollton, Frisco, Plano, and Richardson, including Neutral Grounds in Frisco, which has built a strong following in one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the country. Alvarez Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Arlington started in a two-car garage with four students in 2008 and is now one of the anchor academies for the mid-cities corridor between Dallas and Fort Worth. Austin has over two dozen academies serving a younger, tech-heavy population that has adopted no-gi and submission grappling formats at a faster rate than most Texas cities.

The training culture across the state tends to be direct and competition-aware without being exclusively tournament-focused. Texas gyms generally run structured fundamentals programs alongside advanced classes, and open mats are common enough that cross-training between academies happens regularly. The sheer density of schools — particularly in the suburbs of Houston and DFW — means that competitors are used to seeing familiar faces from other gyms on the tournament circuit, which keeps the regional competition sharp. That said, most academies are explicitly welcoming to beginners; the garage-gym mentality that characterized the early 2000s has largely given way to clean facilities, professional coaching structures, and trial programs.

If you are moving to Texas or starting out for the first time, the practical advice is this: the major metros all have multiple excellent options, so visit a few before committing. Lineage matters here — knowing whether an academy runs a Gracie Barra, Alliance, Machado, or independent curriculum will tell you a lot about what the mat culture looks like day to day.
