North Carolina's most consequential moment in BJJ history may have happened in 2013, when Lucas Lepri — a nine-time black belt world champion and one of fewer than thirty athletes ever inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame — chose Charlotte as the city where he'd build his academy. Lepri had spent years instructing at Alliance New York and Alliance Atlanta under Master Romero "Jacaré" Cavalcanti before planting roots in the South. That decision reshaped what was already a growing state scene into something with genuine national weight. His academy at Sardis Road won the IBJJF Charlotte Open team championship in just its second year of operation, and the ripple effects are still visible in how seriously the Charlotte metro takes competition BJJ.

The Raleigh-Durham Triangle tells a different story — broader, more decentralized, built by practitioners who came up through lineages that emphasized instruction over accolades. Pendergrass Academy of Martial Arts, established in 2006 by brothers Guy and Rob Pendergrass, is one of the area's oldest dedicated grappling schools. The Pendergrass brothers trained at the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York City starting in 1996 before bringing that lineage back to Wake Forest. Across the Triangle, Team Casarez — affiliated with Lucas Lepri's Alliance network — operates out of Cary with satellites serving Raleigh, Apex, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Glayton Melo, out of the Nova União lineage, runs a well-regarded program in downtown Raleigh. The concentration of universities in the Triangle also feeds a consistent pipeline of younger competitors into the local tournament circuit.

Outside the major metros, the state's geography produces distinct subcultures. Fayetteville, home to Fort Bragg, has always had strong military ties to combat sports — Martial Arts of NC operates there under a service-disabled veteran who trained under Professor Michael Donvito, the highest-ranking black belt in the state. In the Piedmont Triad, BJJ High Point serves the Greensboro area. Asheville runs a notably different culture at Open Source Jiu-Jitsu, which operates on drop-in, pay-what-you-can pricing with no contracts — practical for a smaller city with a transient population. Gustavo Machado's affiliation has a presence in Rocky Mount. Out east in the Clayton and Garner area, Revolution Modern Martial Arts has built a multigenerational program since 2009 with well over three hundred five-star reviews across its two locations.

Training culture across the state skews practical. North Carolina isn't historically a flashy competition scene, and most schools reflect that — mixed classes with both gi and no-gi, a steady emphasis on fundamentals, and gyms that stay deliberately small enough for actual coaching. The IBJJF holds regular Opens in Charlotte, and NAGA runs events through multiple cities each year, so competitors have regular regional outlets. The military presence in the eastern half of the state keeps a higher percentage of students training seriously for self-defense rather than sport.
