Lee Synkowski opened Baltimore BJJ in 2005, holding a fourth-degree black belt under Phil Migliarese of Balance Studios in Philadelphia, and built Baltimore County's first school focused exclusively on the modern Brazilian game. Meanwhile, Baltimore Martial Arts Academy had been teaching BJJ since 1995, predating many of the institutions that came later. Rick Slomba brought a different lineage to the state through Form Jiu Jitsu — he spent years training under the Mendes brothers at Art of Jiu Jitsu in California before returning to build a program in Baltimore that has produced competitors at the world-championship level. Columbia alone has significant mat space at Ground Control's regional location. Phil Whitelock's Raw Combat Mid-Atlantic in Easton, founded in 2011, brought structured training to Talbot County with a curriculum aimed heavily at first responders and law enforcement.

The training culture in Maryland leans practical. Given the concentration of military and federal law enforcement in the state — Fort Meade, NSA, and dozens of federal agencies have employees throughout the DC metro counties — many gyms carry a self-defense emphasis alongside sport jiu-jitsu. That isn't universally true; Form Jiu Jitsu and Baltimore BJJ both run competitive programs with tournament records. But walk into a Maryland gym without a competitive background and you won't be an outlier. The culture generally rewards consistency over flash, which makes it a functional state for white belts who want to actually learn.
