I’ve been a member here for 3 years and can honestly say this gym is something special. From day one, it felt like more than just a place to train. It’s a true family atmosphere where everyone looks out for each other and wants to see one another succeed. Branden and his coaches genuinely care about their students. They pay attention, take time to explain details, and make sure you’re improving while staying safe. Whether you’re brand new or experienced, you’ll feel comfortable walking through the doors. I’m grateful to be part of SBY MMA and highly recommend it to anyone looking for great training and an even better community.
I joined SBY MMA & Fitness about a month ago, honestly a bit reluctantly. As a combat veteran diagnosed with PTSD and major depressive disorder, I’m very antisocial and don’t usually feel comfortable around crowds. I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy being in a gym environment at all. But from the moment I walked into SBY MMA & Fitness, it didn’t take long for that to change. The atmosphere is welcoming, and I immediately felt like I belonged. The trainers are genuinely great people, they meet you exactly where you are, they don’t judge you, and they never pressure or hound you about attendance. If you’re looking for a place where you can grow at your own pace, feel supported, and train without ego or negativity, this gym absolutely delivers. I’m glad I took the step to join.
Joining SBY MMA was the best decision I made for myself in a long time. When a peace order I filed against someone got denied by a judge, I decided to step my game up in protecting my physical well-being and improving my mental health. SBY MMA offer a wide variety of classes for combat fighting, personal training sessions and a conditioning course... and I'm sure I'm forgetting more! The owner has a podcast and there is TONS of social media content to check out any time with training tips and current events. The gym/equipment is kept in immaculate condition. My fellow classmates are friendly and encouraging. The coaches are knowledgeable and personable. It's great to have coaches that hold you accountable, push to bring the best out of you AND make you laugh. I genuinely look forward to class and get an incredible workout every time. Being a member of this organization is BEYOND worth it.
My son joined this gym, it was a chance for growth. We quickly learned that the environment was what he needed to grow as a combat sports participant. The coaches quickly developed a community atmosphere for him to grow into and excel for all his future goals. Highly recommend this gym for your children to grow and thrive in. there is something for all to do here. Every coach goes above and beyond to make them comfortable at the facility!! Give them a chance and you will see the difference! The place and people will make your family a part of their community. Come experience it for your self!
When I first spoke with Branden about joining his gym he talked with me answering any questions I had really showing consideration to my personal experience. It only took one trial class for me to know i wanted to sign up from the moment I walked into the gym I was met with nothing but a warm welcome and given attention not only by coach Branden, but his students who helped me better understand what we learned and feel comfortable walking onto the mat with them. I would recommend SBY MMA and Fitness to anyone who wants to have excellent martial arts instruction, an intense workout, or to experience the pride of being part of a hard working and respectful community.
Frequently Asked Questions
IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?
Absolutely. We invite all prospective students to try their first class free at Southside Jiu Jitsu Club. It's the best way to experience our training environment, meet our coaches, and see if BJJ is right for you. No experience or equipment needed — comfortable athletic clothing is fine.
DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE TO START?
No experience necessary! Southside Jiu Jitsu Club welcomes complete beginners. Our instructors break down every technique step by step, and our community is known for being welcoming and patient with new students. Everyone starts as a white belt, and that's exactly where you should start too.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?
For your first visit, comfortable athletic clothing works perfectly — a t-shirt and shorts or athletic pants. Once you commit to training regularly, you'll want to invest in a gi (kimono). Our coaches can recommend quality options at a range of price points.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN?
Most students at Southside Jiu Jitsu Club train 2 to 3 times per week and see consistent progress. Showing up regularly matters far more than training intensely once in a while. We offer multiple class times throughout the week so you can find a schedule that fits your life.
DO YOU OFFER CLASSES FOR KIDS?
We primarily serve adult students. Please contact us directly to ask about availability for younger students — we're happy to point you in the right direction.
