The other figure who shaped the region early was Lloyd Irvin, who opened his DC-area academy in 1996 after earning his blue belt under Mario Yamasaki and Leo Dalla. Irvin's Team Lloyd Irvin became the first non-Brazilian team to claim a world team title, and from his program came fighters like Mike Easton — the UFC bantamweight who grew up in DC, earned his BJJ black belt under Irvin in 2007, and went on to beat John Dodson before making his UFC debut in October 2011. Nyjah Rollins, also a black belt out of the Irvin system, became one of the first generation of American women to win at the World, Pan American, and European level. These weren't athletes who left DC to find competition — they were built here.

The training geography breaks along the District's quadrants and the Metro. Northwest DC holds the densest concentration of options: BETA Academy on Florida Avenue NW operates out of a 10,000 square foot facility with three separate mat areas, offering BJJ alongside Muay Thai and strength work — it's the largest martial arts school in the city. A few blocks away in culture and a different neighborhood in character, N-Flux on Eye Street NW runs a no-gi program under 10th Planet brown belt Chris Torres, who also holds a Krav Maga black belt and won the 2011 WKA Lightweight MMA World Championship. East of the Anacostia, Urban Boxing at Navy Yard on K Street SE brings in Mike Easton himself as a coach, connecting current students directly to DC's most decorated competitive lineage.

The training culture across DC is shaped partly by the city's transient population. A large share of students rotate in and out on two- or four-year cycles — congressional staffers, military personnel, federal contractors, graduate students — which creates open mats that are unusually mixed in background. Academies here have adapted to that reality: most offer structured foundations programs and treat onboarding seriously rather than throwing beginners straight into competition-prep rounds. The result is a mat culture that's technically rigorous without the insularity that marks some single-lineage gyms.

Newcomers to the area should know that DC proper is geographically small but the BJJ ecosystem extends into adjacent Maryland and Virginia, and most practitioners cross those lines freely. Within the District itself, MatMade currently lists 10 gyms, spanning from Estilo Jiu Jitsu's deep Yamasaki roots to newer no-gi and MMA-integrated programs. The city has no single dominant affiliation — if anything, the mix of Gracie lineage schools, independent academies, and 10th Planet-influenced no-gi programs makes it easier to cross-train here than in markets where one team controls the conversation.
