Maryland's BJJ story has a clear starting point: John Rallo. Before founding Ground Control in Baltimore, Rallo began training under Renzo Gracie and spent years building something most Marylanders didn't know they were missing. On November 22, 2006, Renzo promoted him to black belt — making Rallo the first Renzo Gracie black belt in the state. Ground Control became the only Renzo Gracie-certified academy in Baltimore, and Rallo used that platform to do something beyond teaching class: he got mixed martial arts legalized in Maryland. He worked directly with the state legislature and a downtown law firm to enact the laws that allowed amateur and professional MMA competition, then built SHOGUN — the first dedicated MMA competition venue in the state. The sport in Maryland owes more to that one man than any other figure in its early years.

That foundation gave other instructors somewhere to plant their own roots. Lee Synkowski opened Baltimore BJJ in 2005, holding a fourth-degree black belt under Phil Migliarese of Balance Studios in Philadelphia, and built Baltimore County's first school focused exclusively on the modern Brazilian game. Meanwhile, Baltimore Martial Arts Academy had been teaching BJJ since 1995, predating many of the institutions that came later. Rick Slomba brought a different lineage to the state through Form Jiu Jitsu — he spent years training under the Mendes brothers at Art of Jiu Jitsu in California before returning to build a program in Baltimore that has produced competitors at the world-championship level. On the Eastern Shore, Ronin Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Chester operates as a Carlos Machado affiliate and has been rated the Shore's top martial arts academy for seven consecutive years by Shore Update — a reminder that serious training exists well outside the I-95 corridor.

Geographically, the state breaks into three distinct zones. Baltimore and its surrounding suburbs hold the densest concentration of schools and have hosted NAGA tournaments regularly, making it the competitive center of the state. The DC suburbs — Bethesda, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Bowie, and the Howard County cities like Columbia — form the second major cluster, fed by proximity to the capital's large transient professional population of military, law enforcement, and government contractors who train seriously and move on. Columbia alone has significant mat space at Ground Control's regional location. Out west and along the Eastern Shore, academies like Ryoma Academy in mountain Maryland and Ronin BJJ on the Shore serve communities that would otherwise have no access. Phil Whitelock's Raw Combat Mid-Atlantic in Easton, founded in 2011, brought structured training to Talbot County with a curriculum aimed heavily at first responders and law enforcement.

The training culture in Maryland leans practical. Given the concentration of military and federal law enforcement in the state — Fort Meade, NSA, and dozens of federal agencies have employees throughout the DC metro counties — many gyms carry a self-defense emphasis alongside sport jiu-jitsu. That isn't universally true; Form Jiu Jitsu and Baltimore BJJ both run competitive programs with tournament records. But walk into a Maryland gym without a competitive background and you won't be an outlier. The culture generally rewards consistency over flash, which makes it a functional state for white belts who want to actually learn.

MatMade lists 155 BJJ gyms across Maryland, covering everything from major metro academies in Baltimore to smaller affiliate schools in Hagerstown and the rural counties near the Virginia and Pennsylvania borders. If you are looking for a gym, the distribution is dense enough that almost every resident of the state can find instruction within a reasonable drive — the Eastern Shore being the one region where options thin out, making established schools like Ronin and Raw Combat Mid-Atlantic genuinely important anchors for that community.
