Gracie Barra Overland Park anchors the gi competition side, operating as the area's largest Gracie Barra affiliate. Marathon MMA in Overland Park added a sharper competitive edge in November 2016 when UFC lightweight Trey Ogden took over the BJJ program; Ogden has since earned a gold medal at IBJJF black belt level while still competing professionally. Brazil Academy USA in Lenexa rounds out that corridor, offering BJJ alongside Capoeira and Muay Thai for students across the southwest Kansas City suburbs. In total, MatMade lists 103 gyms across Kansas, and a substantial fraction of them are concentrated in these zip codes along the Kansas side of the state line.

Wichita tells a separate story. The Wichita Jiu Jitsu Club launched in 2010 and affiliated with Rafael Lovato Jr., the Oklahoma-born black belt and former world champion who built one of the strongest instructional networks in the central United States. That affiliation also connects Wichita competitors to the Six Blades team under Xande Ribeiro. Running parallel to that lineage, Fox Fitness BJJ operates out of a gym on North Tyler Road under Jake Fox, a 3rd-degree black belt who started training in 2000 and earned his rank through the Carlson Gracie tree — specifically under Professor André "Tim" Monteiro, whose own lineage traces back through Francisco "Toco" Albuquerque. Fox spent five years as head instructor at JMTK in South Wichita before opening his own academy. The two schools represent different technical and competitive traditions, and together they've made Wichita a consistent presence at regional tournaments.

Spread across the rest of the state, you'll find functioning programs in Lawrence, Topeka, Junction City, and smaller cities. Newton Jiu Jitsu, at 400 South Main in Newton, is one of the more notable rural outposts — it runs under the Wichita Jiu Jitsu Club umbrella and the Lovato association, extending that competitive network into Harvey County. Northwest Kansas is newer ground; Goodland got its first dedicated academy in 2021.

For a newcomer moving to Kansas, the Johnson County area offers the most concentrated options and the highest training frequency. Wichita requires more research but rewards it. The culture across the state leans toward structured gi training with active regional competition, and the presence of active professional fighters at gyms like ATT HD and Marathon MMA means the standard of live training is higher than the state's size might suggest.
