Utah's BJJ lineage runs through one man more than any other: Pedro Sauer, a coral belt and Rickson Gracie black belt, who moved to Salt Lake City in December 1990 and spent the next fifteen years building the sport from scratch in the American Southwest. St. George anchors the southern end of the state through Team Fusion MMA and a handful of smaller academies, serving a region that has grown considerably as the greater Dixie area expands. Competition participation is active, with regional tournaments drawing strong fields throughout the year. Serious competitors travel to regional and national events without much friction given Utah's central geography.
