Utah's BJJ lineage runs through one man more than any other: Pedro Sauer, a coral belt and Rickson Gracie black belt, who moved to Salt Lake City in December 1990 and spent the next fifteen years building the sport from scratch in the American Southwest. Eduardo Mori has run Mori Training Center in Ogden for over two decades, and his gym produced Amy Campo, who won the 2022 ADCC National Championship over Gabi Garcia — a result that put Utah on the national competition map in a way that few results could. St. George anchors the southern end of the state through Team Fusion MMA and a handful of smaller academies, serving a region that has grown considerably as the greater Dixie area expands. The Provo-Orem stretch along the Wasatch Front has enough academies that newcomers in Utah County can train most days of the week without driving far.

The training culture across Utah gyms leans technical and gym-loyal. Open mats exist and inter-gym relationships are generally positive, but each academy tends to carry a distinct identity tied to its lineage. The LDS community's emphasis on self-discipline and physical fitness has made Utah receptive to grappling arts in ways that might surprise outsiders — youth programs at most academies fill quickly, and many adult practitioners started through family. Competition participation is active, with regional tournaments drawing strong fields throughout the year. Serious competitors travel to regional and national events without much friction given Utah's central geography.
