Oklahoma's BJJ story starts with a school that had no mats. In 1993, Rafael Lovato Sr. opened an academy in Oklahoma City called Martial Arts International, teaching Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do concepts and shooto wrestling. BJJ was a rumor in most of the country then — the first UFC had not even aired. But Lovato Sr. kept training, eventually earning his black belt under Carlos Machado in 2003, and his school became the first Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy in Oklahoma City affiliated with the Ribeiro Brothers Association. His son Rafael Lovato Jr., who grew up on the mats there, went on to become the most accomplished American-born competitor in the sport's history: in 2007 he won the BJJ Grand Slam, becoming the first person to win the Pan Championship, European Championship, Brasileiros, and World Championship at black belt in a single calendar year. He was also the first non-Brazilian ever to win the Brasileiros. In 2019 he knocked off MMA champion Gegard Mousasi to capture the Bellator Middleweight World Championship, going 11-0 as a professional fighter. Lovato Jr. now runs the OKC academy on NW 50th Street, and the Lovato association has promoted more BJJ black belts in Oklahoma than any other organization in state history.

Tulsa developed on a separate track, shaped heavily by the Carlos Machado lineage. Apollo's Martial Arts, a multi-decade presence in the city, operates as a Machado affiliate school under Master Carlos Machado and has been one of the most consistent entry points for Tulsans into the sport. The city's first dedicated BJJ academy was Triton Fight Center, founded by Piet Wilhelm, a Marine Corps veteran and 4th-degree black belt under Renato Tavares. Wilhelm launched the school in 2002 and relocated it to Broken Arrow — in the Tulsa metro — in 2004. Gracie Magazine recognized Triton as one of America's best grappling academies, and it has remained the anchor of Tulsa's competitive scene for over two decades. A separate thread runs through Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Tulsa, where co-founder Robert trained from 1996 at Apollo's, sought out seminars with the Machado brothers, Royce Gracie, and the Ribeiro brothers, and then built a school in his garage before opening a Gracie University Certified Training Center on June 2, 2012.

Geographically, Oklahoma City and its suburbs carry the highest concentration of schools. The OKC metro includes the Lovato headquarters, Carlson Gracie Oklahoma under head coach Sandro Sampaio, American Top Team OKC, and Redline Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Edmond, which opened in 2004 as Edmond's first BJJ academy. Norman, home to the University of Oklahoma, has Fight or Flight Fitness and Continuum JiuJitsu, both of which field active competitive teams in IBJJF, NAGA, and AGF tournaments. The university population keeps the Norman scene younger and hungrier than most. Tulsa's scene is more distributed across the metro — Broken Arrow, Owasso, and Bixby all have schools, with Apollo's reaching students in Bixby and Owasso through its Machado programs.

Training culture in Oklahoma runs practical and competition-oriented. The Lovato organization's influence means that lineage traceability matters here — coaches know where their black belts came from and who signed them. The state hosts an official IBJJF Open in Oklahoma City, which draws competitors from Texas, Kansas, Arkansas, and Missouri. Outside of major tournaments, the club-to-club open mat culture is strong; smaller gyms regularly host visiting black belts and regional camps. The sport has spread far beyond OKC and Tulsa — you'll find active schools in Lawton, Stillwater, Muskogee, Enid, and Yukon, among others.

MatMade lists 152 BJJ gyms across Oklahoma, from the Lovato flagship in Oklahoma City to smaller academies in towns like Poteau and Tahlequah. The density of options in this state is easy to underestimate. Oklahoma punches above its weight partly because of what one family built here over thirty years, and partly because the Machado network seeded Tulsa with technical depth early enough for the city to develop its own competitive identity independent of OKC.
