New Hampshire's most significant date in jiu jitsu is April 2009. At the grand opening of Renzo Gracie NH in Exeter, Renzo Gracie himself showed up unannounced and — alongside Professor Rafael — promoted Kevin Landry to black belt, making Landry the first Renzo Gracie black belt in the state. Landry had been training since 1994, and that evening in Exeter marked the formal recognition of what he had built. He now runs academies in Windham, Exeter, and Manchester as the sole Renzo Gracie representative in New Hampshire, carrying a 3rd-degree black belt lineage that traces directly to the Gracie family's most competitive branch.

That moment was a landmark, not a beginning. The state had been developing grappling roots through the 1990s, most visibly in the White Mountains. Craig Willey — a 3rd-degree black belt with over 29 years on the mats — runs White Mountain Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu out of Ashland, with a lineage through Carlson Gracie Sr. and Julio "Foca" Fernandez. That same Carlson Gracie thread runs through Concord's New England BJJ Academy, affiliated with BJJ Revolution under Rodrigo Medeiros and Foca, with Tony McBee and Adrian Meader heading the instruction. The Seacoast has its own anchor in Fusion Training Academy, where Chris Ward — who first trained under Royce Gracie — runs a Rodrigo Gracie-affiliated program. Port City BJJ in Newington, just outside Portsmouth, is one of the more competition-credentialed gyms in the state: head instructor Jay Mansfield holds three Pan Am medals, two NAGA titles, and a World championship medal.

Geographically, two corridors carry the weight of the state's BJJ activity. Manchester — the state's largest city — sits at the center of one, with Renzo Gracie NH's Manchester location and several independent academies within driving distance. The Seacoast region, spanning Portsmouth through Newington and North Hampton, is the other. Seacoast Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Granite State BJJ (where Coach Bryan holds a black belt under Olympic judo medalist Travis Stevens), and Port City BJJ form a legitimate cluster with a depth unusual for the population size. The White Mountains and Lakes Region are thinner by comparison — White Mountain BJJ in Ashland is the main anchor north of Concord — but the distance between gyms is part of training in rural New England, not a mark against the programs that exist there.

Training culture in New Hampshire skews practical over flashy. The state has no single dominant affiliation, which tends to produce instructors who built their games through grinding rather than brand loyalty. Competition is available — NAGA runs events in Derry, and Grappling Industries schedules multiple New Hampshire dates each year — but most programs don't make it mandatory. Drop-in culture is generally accommodating, particularly at the Seacoast and Manchester gyms. New Hampshire also has a meaningful contingent of law enforcement and military personnel on the mats; several academies run LEO-specific programs, which shapes the emphasis toward control-based techniques over sport-first aesthetics.
