Michigan's BJJ roots run through a single name most people outside the state don't know: Ryan Fiorenzi. In 1994, shortly after the early UFCs put Brazilian jiu-jitsu on the map, Fiorenzi started training and eventually became Michigan's first BJJ black belt, receiving his rank under Rigan Machado. He opened East West Martial Arts in 1997, later founding Kaizen Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the Midwest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Alliance — a lineage that helped wire together what would become one of the Midwest's more developed grappling networks. That foundational work meant Michigan had established academies and a black belt pipeline years before most comparable states could say the same.

The Detroit metro is where the state's density is highest. Metro Jiu-Jitsu in Southgate runs a 7,000 square foot facility with a long track record, and has expanded to a Canton location. Metro Detroit Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy near Shelby Township pulls from the Rochester Hills corridor. Troy itself is served by multiple academies, including Troy Martial Arts, which has operated since 1980 and added BJJ to its curriculum, and APEX Jiu-Jitsu, whose lineage traces directly to Renzo Gracie. Out in Chesterfield, Champion Jiu-Jitsu is anchored by Professor Cascao, a 5th-degree black belt under Mario Sukata and Fabio Santos with multiple World and Pan American titles to his name — one of the more decorated instructors in the state. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club of Michigan, under Professor Steve Baker and affiliated with Joe Moreira International, adds another serious competition-oriented option on the southeast side.

Outside metro Detroit, Grand Rapids has built its own identity. Kraken Jiu-Jitsu is the anchor there, led by the only IBJJF-certified black belt who trained from white belt to second degree entirely in West Michigan. That matters — it means the Grand Rapids scene has a homegrown backbone rather than being entirely dependent on out-of-state academies for its upper ranks. Lansing is covered by Magic BJJ, Mid-Michigan's longest-running dedicated academy. Up north in Petoskey, Ronin Jiu-Jitsu Academy serves the more rural northern part of the Lower Peninsula, proof the sport has spread well beyond the urban centers. Ann Arbor's university environment has kept a steady stream of grapplers moving through its academies for decades, with local black belts like Sean Bansfield anchoring the scene between student cohorts.

Michigan's training culture tends to blend competition seriousness with Midwest pragmatism. The state runs a full tournament calendar — Grappling Industries Detroit, NAGA Detroit, Tap Cancer Out, and regional events in Grand Rapids and Lansing give competitors plenty of reps through the year without having to travel out of state. That consistent local competition exposure has pushed technical standards up across the board. Gyms here tend to run hard no-gi programs alongside traditional gi training, reflecting the national shift, but the gi lineage from foundational academies like Kaizen and the Machado connection has kept classical technique alive in the curriculum.

The southeast corner around Detroit and Troy has the highest concentration, but the gap between that cluster and Grand Rapids has closed significantly in the past decade. Wherever you land geographically, you won't be far from black belt instruction and a regular training group that shows up consistently.
