Massachusetts got its first real taste of Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 1995, when Roberto Maia — a black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. who received his rank from Renzo Gracie — opened Boston Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the metro area. Maia, originally from Rio de Janeiro, is widely credited as the person who put BJJ on the map in New England. In the three decades since, he has promoted over 50 black belts, many of whom went on to open their own academies and seed the art across the region. In 2024 he was awarded his coral belt — a marker of what that original investment in the state actually produced.

Boston and its inner suburbs remain the center of gravity. Brazilian Top Team Boston, one of the first BTT affiliates established in the United States, operates out of the metro area under professors Daniel Gazoni and Joao Amaral, maintaining the technical standards the organization is known for. In South Boston, Broadway Jiu-Jitsu and Fitness — a Carlson Gracie affiliate founded in 2011 and led by head instructor John Clarke — has built a reputation for being one of the more welcoming competition-oriented gyms in the city, drawing a mix of fighters and recreational students through its doors on W. Broadway. The Daniel Gracie Academy in Northborough brings Gracie family tradition to the suburbs west of the city, while Mau-Mau BJJ and Kimura BJJ in Revere round out a metro area where almost every major lineage is represented within a short drive.

Outside Boston, the South Coast is probably the most underrated BJJ corridor in the state. Danny "Zeus" Savery, a 4th-degree black belt and one of the most respected coaches in all of New England, runs Danny Savery BJJ across locations in Somerset and Fairhaven — serving the Fall River and New Bedford belt. He has been building that program since 2007. SBG East Coast, operating out of Dartmouth near New Bedford, is led by Stephen Whittier, a 4th-degree black belt whose "40 Plus BJJ" curriculum has earned him a following well beyond Massachusetts. Worcester has its own cluster of schools, and the Pioneer Valley around Springfield has been developing steadily, though it remains thinner than the coast.

Training culture in Massachusetts tends toward the technical and competitive without being exclusively focused on either. The Boston area has enough competitors cycling through regional IBJJF and NAGA events to keep the rooms sharp, but most academies here run mixed-level open mats where the emphasis is controlled, purposeful rolling rather than ego-driven scrambles. The density of schools means there is real cross-training between affiliated gyms — belt promotions in Maia's network, for instance, often draw practitioners from multiple affiliate schools. New students can expect a steeper learning curve than in some markets simply because the average mat experience level is high, but most gyms in the state are deliberate about building a functional on-ramp for beginners.
