Chicago is where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Illinois took root, and the man most responsible for planting it is Carlson Gracie Jr. He moved to the city in 1996 to learn English and opened the state's first BJJ academy in 1997. As a 6th-degree black belt and the son of Carlson Gracie Sr., he brought direct lineage from one of the sport's founding families to the Midwest. That early foothold mattered — by the time the broader MMA boom made grappling arts mainstream in the 2010s, Chicago already had an established infrastructure of black belts who had come up through serious programs.

The instructors who followed built out a genuinely competitive city. Adem Redzovic, a 4th-degree black belt under Red Belt Grand Master Carley Gracie, runs a well-regarded academy in Chicago known for conceptual, detail-heavy teaching — the kind of school where practitioners tend to develop unusual technical depth. Hannette Staack and Andre "Negão" Terencio, both decorated world champions, lead Brazil-021 Chicago, which functions as one of the city's elite competition-track programs. Taylor Biagi runs her own academy on the near west side at 508 N. Hoyne — a 14-year black belt who has coached competition champions and worked with UFC fighters on fight camp preparation, now building a beginner-friendly environment that doesn't sacrifice technical rigor to do it.

Outside the city, the collar counties have developed their own anchors. Naperville alone has at least five gyms, with BJJ Lab standing out — eight black belt instructors, a dedicated women's program, and a kids program structured well enough to develop real foundational skills rather than just keep kids occupied. The DuPage County corridor running through Naperville, Wheaton, and Aurora tends to attract training populations with competitive goals, partly because the gyms there push students toward regional tournaments. Rockford holds the northwest corner of the state's scene, with Core Combat Sports drawing students from that metro. Peoria has a smaller but functional presence, and as you move downstate the options thin out considerably — this is a state where training density drops sharply once you leave the Chicago metro.

The competition calendar reflects how organized Illinois has become. The IBJJF Chicago Open runs annually, Grappling Industries holds multiple rounds in the city each year, and regional stops like NAGA and FUJI draw competitors from across the state and neighboring Indiana and Wisconsin. The cross-pollination from these events has helped elevate the average level of mat knowledge, particularly in the suburbs. Training culture in Chicago proper skews technical and no-nonsense, with a tradition of gym crosstraining that's more common here than in cities where academy politics tend to wall off competitors from each other.

The concentration of high-level instructors in the Chicago metro means a newcomer almost anywhere in the collar counties can find serious training within a reasonable drive.
