Georgia's place in American BJJ history is tied directly to one decision: in 1997, Romero "Jacare" Cavalcanti chose Atlanta over Miami as the permanent home for Alliance Jiu-Jitsu. Cavalcanti — one of six men promoted to black belt by the legendary Rolls Gracie before Gracie's death in 1982 — had co-founded Alliance in 1993, and when he settled in Sandy Springs and opened his first Georgia school, he anchored one of the most decorated teams in the sport's history to this state. Borges BJJ in Marietta represents another thread of the Alliance lineage — Professor Borges was born in Goiás, Brazil, moved to Atlanta in 1998, trained under Cavalcanti, and became the first Brazilian to earn a black belt under him on American soil. Diego Saraiva, based in Norcross, has accumulated over 30 black belt medals at IBJJF events and runs one of the metro's most competition-focused programs.

Outside Atlanta, Savannah has a small but steady scene anchored by Serg BJJ and Gracie-affiliated schools in the Pooler area.
