Alabama's most consequential address in jiu jitsu is a back room in a Decatur karate school. That's where Brandon McCaghren — a Speake, Alabama native who had driven back and forth to Los Angeles to train under Eddie Bravo — started teaching 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu as a blue belt out of Webster's Karate. In 2010, McCaghren opened 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu Decatur officially, making it the first 10th Planet location in the entire southeastern United States. By 2014 it was ranked the top academy in the 10th Planet system. Eight years after opening, McCaghren founded the Professional Grappling Federation from that same north-Alabama city — building what was at the time the country's only professional jiu-jitsu league, running week-long seasons with a draft combine, team competition, and playoffs. In 2025, nine Alabama gym owners pooled resources to form the Alabama Twisters under a seven-figure PGF deal, with world-class competitor Renato Canuto serving as head coach — a model loosely patterned on community ownership, built entirely from local gym infrastructure.

Birmingham and its suburbs anchor the largest cluster of training in the state. The city has Gracie Barra representation through Professor Kaliffa Oliveira at Greystone — Oliveira holds a black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. since 2013 and carries a two-time world judo championship title alongside it — as well as Gracie Barra locations in Pelham and Trussville. Spartan Fitness in Homewood trains under the Straight Blast Gym International banner, running an MMA-integrated approach. 10th Planet Birmingham operates out of the city's core, focused on no-gi and leg lock competition. Lions Pride Jiu Jitsu in Trussville, east of Birmingham, adds another option in the dense northeast corridor. The range from structured Gracie Barra curriculum to Bravo-lineage no-gi to SBG aliveness training means Birmingham-area practitioners have real stylistic options, not just geographic proximity.

Huntsville is the state's other major hub. Alliance Huntsville opened in 2021 under Austin Broach, a black belt under Jacare Cavalcanti and Leo Nogueira who relocated from the main Alliance headquarters. Broach brought a pedigree from arguably the most decorated competition team in the sport's history — Alliance holds thirteen world championship titles. Gracie Barra Huntsville runs parallel to it, led by Professor Jimmie Lowrie, who received his black belt directly from Carlos Gracie Jr. at the 2019 Gracie Barra World Summit. The Rocket City's tech-sector demographics and steady military population from Redstone Arsenal have built a training base that supports high-level competition preparation alongside genuine recreational programs. Maverick Training Center adds Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai to the mix.

Outside the two main metros, the state has meaningful coverage from coast to north. Tuscaloosa has Blue Hawk MMA on Greensboro Ave and Cobra BJJ in the university-adjacent market there. Down in the Gulf Coast strip, The Academy for Mixed Martial Arts in Foley runs both gi and no-gi under Todd Pisarich, who trains under Helio Soneca's lineage. Auburn and Opelika have Kagefit, which is part of the Alabama Twisters ownership coalition. Montgomery has NXG Combat Sports as the primary option. The spread means serious competitors in Alabama are rarely more than an hour from a credentialed academy.

Training culture in Alabama skews hard. The state has no single dominant style — Gracie Barra's structured curriculum, 10th Planet's no-gi submission grappling, and Alliance's competition-oriented drilling all coexist without much overlap. The PGF's presence means weekly broadcast competition exists here that doesn't exist most places, and the Alabama Twisters have given local gyms a shared professional stake in the competitive results of their students. A newcomer should expect to choose a lineage deliberately: gi-first Gracie Barra schools will run you through a fundamentals curriculum; 10th Planet and SBG affiliates will put you into resistance-based drilling quickly and expect you to flow roll before your technique is clean. MatMade lists 107 gyms across Alabama, enough that most counties have at least one option within a reasonable drive — the filtering challenge is finding the right fit, not finding proximity.
