About Western Plains BJJ

At Western Plains Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Gillette, we are proud to be one of the largest and longest-established martial arts academies in Northeast Wyoming. Founded in 2014 by Professor Miles Fortner, our academy at 900 EZ St has built a community around the art of BJJ with direct lineage to Grandmaster Helio Gracie — one of the founders of the gentle art as we know it today.

Our certified instructor team includes Professor Miles Fortner, Professor Travis, Coach Chris, Coach Elijsha, Coach Dan, Coach Alex, and Coach Kyle. Each instructor brings years of BJJ experience and a shared commitment to authentic, lineage-driven instruction. We believe that the best jiu-jitsu is rooted in proven principles, and every class we teach reflects that belief.

Beyond BJJ, we offer adult karate and a full roster of self-defense seminars featuring visiting experts. Our mission is to bring diverse members of the Gillette community together through training that builds self-confidence, fitness, and mental focus. This is such a great gym/ academy to train at. Both my husband (adult class) and son(teen class) attend. From a parent stand point, I am extremely impressed with the kids/ teen classes- they push the kids just enough, they are supportive and the instructors have a kind heart. You can tell they really care about each and every student and their learning journey. My husband loves the classes that he has been going to. The bathrooms are clean and well kept, including the showers and there is even a dry sauna! They even offer an all womens class, which Im looking forward to trying out when my baby is a little older.

My go to gym when I’m in town. The instructors are great the people are easy to approach and ask for advice “no egos”.

Very modern, clean facility with some very nice amenities, including a footwash station that everyone is required to use before stepping on the mat, a reverse osmosis water fountain, a shower and stocked hygenic products. Excellent instructors for both beginners and advanced BJJ. Wide variety of people to train with as well, if you're looking to practice technique and go through your mistakes slowly, someone can help you do that; if you're looking to go hard and train realtime, theres more than enough people that can help you achieve that goal. Check it out, they have a free week so you got nothing to lose.

Clean Jiu-Jitsu academy. Two large fans help with air circulation; a dehumidifier and ozone machine are run every night to keep the academy fresh and clean. Western Plains provides a foot bath for cleaning feet before entering the mat. The mat space is swept, vacuumed, and disinfected every night after classes. Clean bathrooms for men and women both include a shower. BJJ curriculum is focused on self- defense fundamentals and is perfect for all ages and skill levels.
