The Base Vancouver
About The Base Vancouver
At The Base Vancouver, we're committed to bringing authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to our corner of Washington. Located in Vancouver, we focus on what matters: solid fundamentals, respect for the craft, and building a community where adults can train seriously and grow. Whether you're stepping on the mat for the first time or refining your game, we're here to meet you where you are.
Our training emphasizes the core principles of BJJ—technique over strength, position over submission, and continuous learning. We create an atmosphere where questions are welcomed and progress is celebrated, not rushed. Every class is structured to challenge newer students while offering depth for those further along in their journey.
We offer adult BJJ classes designed to fit real life schedules, whether you're looking to stay active, build confidence, or pursue competition. If you're ready to learn the art and be part of a gym that values hard work and humility, come roll with us.
Reviews
Been training for 15 years, have been a member or dropped in on open mats at 90% of the gyms in the Portland/Vancouver area. The base Vancouver has the most talent and color on the mats in the area. I am consistently getting my lunch money taken from the upper belts on a daily basis. Coach Chris is always studying the game and bringing new techniques that are currently winning championships to the mats. If you want to get better or start learning from the right people the base is where you go.
Look no further than THE BASE Vancouver. Coach Chris and Nikala are absolutely impressive—along with their rock star staff. We are lucky to have found this place. Go check them out.
The trainers are excellent! They find a way to reach everyone. The atmosphere in the gym is wonderful. The kids enjoy training! Thank you for your hard work!
Top level instruction from passionate, progressive and dedicated professors. Great for people who want to stay in shape or compete at the highest level in the sport and anywhere in-between. A wonderful place for kids with full classes, full of positivity and growth with caring coaches who care about your kids success on and off the mats. Clean and sanitary environment. I can't find enough positive things to say about this gym and the people there. If you are there daily or haven't been on the mats in a decade or it's your first time ever; you will be greeted like a family member. Because that's what this gym is. A family.
This school is an amazing place to train. I’ve trained for over 13 years. I’ve trained at many different schools over the year. The base has been such a great experience. They are so professional, and absolutely a dream to work with. Signing up was super easy. Also, when some unforeseen events happened and I had to cancel my membership, that only took one text. It was so nice because I’ve had some really bad experiences canceling memberships with other schools in the past. I would highly recommend The Base to anyone and everyone that is interested in the grappling arts. 10 out of 10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Frequently Asked Questions
DO I NEED EXPERIENCE TO START TRAINING BJJ?
Not at all! The Base Vancouver welcomes complete beginners. We offer introductory classes specifically designed to teach the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a safe, supportive environment. Everyone starts somewhere, and our coaches will guide you every step of the way.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?
For your first visit, comfortable athletic wear such as shorts and a rash guard works perfectly. Once you train regularly, you'll want a gi (BJJ uniform). We train gi here — our coaches can point you toward the right gear.
IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?
Yes! We encourage you to try a class before committing. Contact The Base Vancouver to schedule your complimentary intro class and experience our training environment for yourself.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN AS A BEGINNER?
Most beginners see strong progress training 2-3 times per week. Consistency matters more than volume early on. As your conditioning improves, many students increase to 4-5 sessions per week.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET A BLUE BELT IN BJJ?
On average, dedicated students earn their blue belt in 1-2 years of consistent training. Progression depends on mat time, active learning, and open rolling. Each stripe reflects real skill growth.
