Reviews
My 12 yr old granddaughter has been enrolled at Seung-ni for 3 years. She was never an athlete kind of kid but she certainly has been so proud of herself with her own pace yet plenty of encouragement and fun from the instructors. What really stood out was her response to me when I told her to try hard in a class. She said "I know how to try because I do it with my karate class." "Awesome" is the word she uses to describe her classes.
A place where your kids are pushed to their limits (in a good way). Lifelong friendships and grit are formed all while learning to defend themselves and their loved ones. In today's day and age this is EXACTLY what our kids need! We've been involved with Seung Ni for over 20 years now and don't plan to stop anytime soon.
I was nervous this may not be a good fit for our son who is high-energy, fast-paced, and goofy. I am SO glad we gave it a try because he LOVED it. He has tried a lot of activities from ages 4 to 7 including hockey, baseball, soccer, BMX, gymnastics, and ninja but the Taekwondo class here spoke to him in a way we've never seen before. Not only is he building strength and burning energy in a positive way - he is learning focus, discipline, and self-control. It has been a pleasure watching him thrive in class!
Sueng-ni is the best BJJ training gym in northern Michigan! Nothing beats the amazing group of people that train here! Now affiliated with Gustavo Machado, both Kevin and Justin bring incredible knowledge and experience to their instruction. All ages and abilities train together... guys, girls, and kids are welcome. I've never been to a more welcoming gym!
Coming to Seung-ni, I was pretty intimidated. As someone who hadn't trained a lot and who had already experienced a pretty unprofessional school, my thoughts were something like, "I hope they're chill" and "I hope I don't get hurt." My first day on the mats doing jiu-jitsu, I immediately met my first friend Dan, who very warmly, considerately and patiently introduced me to what Seung-ni was all about. It was refreshing and a huge relief. Since then, I have been training 4 days a week for about 3 months. I've had the privilege of interacting with almost every person in the school and I can say with clarity that everyone is friendly, considerate, and ready to help support your growth. The culture that exists here is rare and truly demonstrates how excellent the leadership at Seung-ni is. What they have done is very hard to do and it's a wonderful thing to be a part of. I feel I've truly found my training home. If you're interested in the Martial Arts, interested in community or just exercise, I can't recommend them enthusiastically enough. Thank you Seung-ni!
Frequently Asked Questions
DO I NEED EXPERIENCE TO START TRAINING BJJ?
Not at all! Seung-ni Traverse City Martial Arts & Kickboxing Academy welcomes complete beginners. Everyone starts somewhere, and our coaches will guide you every step of the way.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?
For your first visit, comfortable athletic wear such as shorts and a rash guard works perfectly. Once you train regularly, you'll want a gi (BJJ uniform). We train gi here — our coaches can point you to the right gear.
IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?
Yes! We encourage you to try a class before committing. Contact Seung-ni Traverse City Martial Arts & Kickboxing Academy to schedule your complimentary intro class and experience our training environment for yourself.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN AS A BEGINNER?
Most beginners see strong progress training 2-3 times per week. Consistency matters more than volume early on. As your conditioning improves, many students increase to 4-5 sessions per week.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET A BLUE BELT IN BJJ?
On average, dedicated students earn their blue belt in 1-2 years of consistent training. BJJ progression depends on mat time, active learning, and open rolling. Each stripe reflects real skill growth.
