Today my kids celebrate one year of training Muay Thai at School of Combat Arts. Watching them evolve into strong, confident kids with a healthy sense of pride has been so cool! It was a rough start, (for them and me) anything new and so physical will be difficult in the beginning. There were tears and a desire to quit. I didn’t allow them to give up, we made it through the growing pains and they’re thriving! At 8 and 10 years old they are capable of defending themselves, and will continue to excel in this sport as they hone their skills. In every class they train hard, learn something new and enjoy the challenge. They’re kids, sometimes they still whine, complain and get frustrated but they look forward to every class. Owner Mike Gioe (aka Professor/Kru/Coach) is gifted in his ability to train these kids. He works with their strengths and weaknesses, no one is ever made to feel inferior to anyone else. He’s cultivated the team mentality and the kids help each other to grow in their abilities. Mike is also extraordinarily good at balancing the discipline & the fun! His lifetime of experience and profound knowledge has had such a positive impact on my kids and all of his students. Year round sport-lifelong skills. No initiation fee, no contract and no required uniform. Smaller classes so lots of attention. Just an old school fighting gym with a passionate leader-we love it!

I wanted my child to start taking self-defense lessons, and I couldn't be happier than what we have experienced at Gioe's School of Combat Arts. What we were looking for is a place to help build my child's confidence and learn real life self-defense skills. I can honestly say as a parent, it makes me feel so much better knowing that my child has found this school. The owner, Michael Gioe, gets to know his students and wants everyone to be successful - you will leave feeling better about yourself, while having the right skills if a situation were to arise. If you are looking for a place to feel confident in self-defense, I highly recommend this school.

Coach Gioe’s School of Combat Arts is the place you want to train at. In addition to BJJ his grappling curriculum includes Russian Sambo, Judo, and Catch as Catch Can Wrestling. This is what sets his school apart and makes him stand above the crowd as an instructor. I highly recommend you try out what his school offers, whether it be Muay Thai, BJJ, MMA, Modern Combatives or Pulahan Derobio Eskrima.

Ive trained Jiujitsu with people who've cornered for UFC champion bouts & Michael Gioe is right up there with them. Honestly the best coach I've trained with. A true black belt under Tatu Taborda. You won't find better grappling that how Gioe teaches you a strong blend of Jits, Wrestling, and Sambo. Gi & no-gi. Real life defense application too not just competiton. He covers it all!

Amazing time. Amazing training Amazing price. It's literally everything i wanted for me and my boys. And even my daughter feels comfortable training here. You instantly become part of the mma family and learn at your own pace. And the most friendly atmosphere I've ever felt. We will be purchasing our home within driving distance of this school so me and my kids can continue our life long journey in mma. And Professor Mike gioe is hands down the best and friendliest instructor you can ask for. If your thinking of getting into mma just for hobby like i did or to compete. Either way I guarantee you will be happy you read this review.

Frequently Asked Questions

IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?

Absolutely. We invite all prospective students to try their first class free at School of Combat Arts. It's the best way to experience our training environment, meet our coaches, and see if BJJ is right for you. No experience or equipment needed — comfortable athletic clothing is fine.

DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE TO START?

No experience necessary! School of Combat Arts welcomes complete beginners. Our instructors break down every technique step by step, and our community is known for being welcoming and patient with new students. Everyone starts as a white belt, and that's exactly where you should start too.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?

For your first visit, comfortable athletic clothing works perfectly — a t-shirt and shorts or athletic pants. Once you commit to training regularly, you'll want to invest in a gi (kimono). Our coaches can recommend quality options at a range of price points.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN?

Most students at School of Combat Arts train 2 to 3 times per week and see consistent progress. Showing up regularly matters far more than training intensely once in a while. We offer multiple class times throughout the week so you can find a schedule that fits your life.

DO YOU OFFER CLASSES FOR KIDS?

Yes! We offer dedicated programs for children and teens at School of Combat Arts. Our youth classes focus on discipline, respect, confidence-building, and the fundamentals of BJJ in a safe, fun environment.
