Riverfront Jiu Jitsu
About Riverfront Jiu Jitsu
At Riverfront Jiu Jitsu, we have made our home in Wilmington's Riverfront at 512 Justison Street, and our mission is to make Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu accessible to everyone regardless of age, ability, or prior experience. Head instructor Billy Shaw, a black belt, and Elyse Shaw lead a program that is technically serious and genuinely inclusive.
Our class schedule covers the full range of BJJ development: Little Otters for young children ages four to eight, dedicated Kids classes, a Mat Queens women's program, Beginner Gi and Beginner No-Gi for new students, and Advanced Gi and No-Gi classes for experienced practitioners. We also offer Wrestling and No-Gi Wrestling, Mobility classes, and Skills and Drills sessions that give students targeted development outside of full sparring.
Riverfront JJ is a proud partner of the We Defy Foundation, supporting veterans through martial arts, and maintains a culture where every student is welcomed and valued. If you train with us, you are part of our community — and this community takes care of its own.
Reviews
We joined Riverfront Jiujitsu two months ago and it has been phenomenal. My 9 year old daughter has been asking to “fight” for a while and jiujitsu has been the perfect fit. The dedication of the instructors, along with making safety their number one goal with these kids, is remarkable. I highly recommend Riverfront Jiujitsu.
Highly recommend Riverfront Jiu Jitsu. Billy and Elyse have created such an incredible welcoming environment where it makes it a pleasure to learn and get better everyday. All instructors are very knowledgeable and members are incredible!
awesome gym with an even better atmosphere. billy is a great instructor and genuinely a really nice guy — super welcoming and patient, especially if you’re new to bjj. the environment is friendly, relaxed, and zero ego.
Riverfront Jiu Jitsu is absolutely phenomenal! I’ve never tried any form of martial arts before and had no idea what to expect. After 2 weeks, all I can say is WOW! Everyone has been extremely welcoming, the workout you’ll get is great, and the content is absolutely amazing. If you’re considering Jiu Jitsu I would highly recommend giving this school a try. **1 year update** Still at it! I’m down 15lbs from when I started a year ago, I’ve learned a TON of jiu jitsu, and I have honestly made numerous life long friends from Riverfront Jiu Jitsu. Joining RJJ was absolutely one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life. Billy and Elyse (the owners) have created an amazing environment with some of the best people you could ever want to learn and grow with and the class instruction is second to none. I said it a year ago and mean it 10x more now “if you’re considering Jiu Jitsu (or looking for something fun and new to try) I would HIGHLY recommend giving this group a try!” Hope to see you on the mats 😃 **2 year update** Imagine that?! I’m still here! If you want to make a positive change in your life, what are you waiting for? Come try a class and see why everyone loves this place and the people that train here; I promise you won’t regret it. Great exercise, mental health benefits, and practical life saving skills are all but a few benefits you’ll get from training. “Do or do not, there is no try”- Yoda. **3 year update** Still doing it, still loving it. If you’ve read this far it’s time to jump in, the water is fine. I’ve drank the Kool-Aid and you can too. These goofballs are family and we’d love to adopt you too. The gym has been freshly renovated and we have tons more space in a clean safe environment. There’s new faces and friends made every week and I guarantee there’s someone of your age, size, athleticism, and skill level here just waiting to get some rounds in with you. Join now, thank me later 🙃
I trained here for over two years before I moved cities. The community was incredibly welcoming and is why I am still doing the sport. The instruction is top notch. Coach Billy Shaw has a knack for really breaking down the finer details of fundamental positions. RJJ also provides some of the best stand-up instruction in the area, with wrestling and judo classes taught by former college wrestlers and an experienced judoka respectively. Finally, the gym has a thriving women's program, which to me is a sign of a healthy culture.
