After nearly a year of training here, it’s time to give this gym the five stars it deserves. Several people I trust recommended Rob’s gym, and they were absolutely right. This is the first place where the structure and progression truly make sense. I’ve trained in MMA gyms and at academies around the world. When I tried to transition strictly to BJJ, I often found it overwhelming and hard to stick with. The complexity never fully clicked for me. But from the very first class here, I could tell this was different. I’ve never had the curriculum click like it does under Rob. What truly sets this gym apart is his teaching. He doesn’t just demonstrate techniques; he teaches systems. Each class builds logically on the last. He explains not only what to do, but why it works, when to use it, and how to adjust if it fails. He connects positions in a way that makes jiu jitsu feel intentional instead of random. He has a rare ability to break down complex sequences into simple, repeatable concepts. He answers questions thoroughly and often offers multiple perspectives based on body type, experience level, or goals. Just as important, the culture reflects his leadership. Technique is prioritized over ego, and teammates genuinely want to see each other improve; not compete in unhealthy ways. After double shoulder surgery and past experiences in gyms where internal competition led to unnecessary injuries and toxic environments, I honestly thought I was done training. This gym proved otherwise. If you’re looking for intelligent coaching, structured instruction, and a respectful team atmosphere, this is the place.
Amazing place to train, and with top tier coaching. I’ve been going for a little over 8 months and I’ve seen so much growth in my skill, and myself as a person. Coach Rob is extremely dedicated and passionate about jiu jitsu and it really shows through his coaching.
If you’re in the Prattville area and looking for a high-quality Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym for your kids (or yourself!), I highly recommend giving Richardson Jiu Jitsu a try. Couldn’t be happier with how our kids skills and confidence are improving —worth every minute! 💪🥋.
My daughter and I dropped in for an open mat and had a great time. The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming, with a solid mix of skill levels. Definitely worth checking out if you're nearby. 10/10
This is arguably the best school I’ve trained at in my 5-ish years practicing Jiu Jitsu. Rob is an observant coach that helps fine-tune even the smallest details of each member’s skill set. He holds people to high standards, but maintains a fun and inclusive atmosphere. You will work hard, but you will learn much and have a blast doing it. Great team! Great school! I’m glad I got to spend the last 6 weeks with you while in my travels and I can’t wait to return. I highly recommend that anyone who is serious about improving their game check out Richardson Jiu Jitsu!
