Our son has been a part of the academy since Oct 2024, after he turned 5 years old. It's been amazing to see the confidence build over time. This is in huge part thanks to the warm, welcoming, nature of the academy and his student peers. He's always been treated with respect by his peers, regardless of their experience. They cheer him on and check in on him. I am most impressed by the older kids always role modeling respect and kindness to everyone, regardless of age, size and experience. I highly recommend this for your child if it works with your schedule and family.

My son Noah at the time was 17 years old and pretty resistant to the idea of jujitsu or anything new. I begged him to try it once, he ended up loving it and the best decision I’ve ever made for his confidence, social and physical engagement. Watching him get his blue belt was really rewarding. Andy and the whole class have really supportive and made him feel a part of. Noah is now 21, I highly recommend it

Joined this Academy when I moved to CT from NY, couldn’t be happier. Every school has its own culture and I’ve found this gym to have folks that train in a way that is very helpful, not super aggressive. I’m there 3 years now and have developed some strong friendships that have gone beyond the mats. This is a place where you can concentrate on technique and if you want to go hard you can or if you prefer a slower pace nobody cares, fully recommend!

Highly recommend this facility if you want world-class jiu-jutsu! A friend of mine ask me to dropped in for a class and was blown away. High-level instruction, tough but ego-free rolling, and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere. Andy was very down-to-earth and cared about everyone, he was also very knowledgeable to the fine details. The facilities are clean and well-maintained. I was able to witness a little bit of the kids class, and the kids were having fun and enjoying the class. The facility cater to all levels, from kids' classes to advanced rolling. Definitely highly recommend if you’re in the area.

Andy, the owner, is outstanding. There's such great coaches, upper belts, training partners, and overall instruction. I've been training here off and on for over 3 years; it is a terrific group.

Frequently Asked Questions

IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?

Absolutely. We invite all prospective students to try their first class free at Renzo Gracie Shoreline Academy. It's the best way to experience our training environment, meet our coaches, and see if BJJ is right for you. No experience or equipment needed — comfortable athletic clothing is fine.

DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE TO START?

No experience necessary! Renzo Gracie Shoreline Academy welcomes complete beginners. Our instructors break down every technique step by step, and our community is known for being welcoming and patient with new students. Everyone starts as a white belt, and that's exactly where you should start too.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?

For your first visit, comfortable athletic clothing works perfectly — a t-shirt and shorts or athletic pants. Once you commit to training regularly, you'll want to invest in a gi (kimono). Our coaches can recommend quality options at a range of price points.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN?

Most students at Renzo Gracie Shoreline Academy train 2 to 3 times per week and see consistent progress. Showing up regularly matters far more than training intensely once in a while. We offer multiple class times throughout the week so you can find a schedule that fits your life.

DO YOU OFFER CLASSES FOR KIDS?

We primarily serve adult students. Please contact us directly to ask about availability for younger students — we're happy to point you in the right direction.
