About Red River Judo and Submission Grappling
At Red River Judo and Submission Grappling in Fargo, we carry forward a tradition of excellence in Kodokan Judo and Japanese Jujitsu that has deep roots in this community. Our club was first established in 1979 when Sensei Vern Borgen began teaching Judo at North Dakota State University, and we have been a pillar of the Fargo grappling community ever since. Since 2019, the club has been led by Steven and Melissa Fick, who have continued and built upon that legacy with a commitment to high-quality, principled instruction.
Our lead instructor, Steven Fick, holds a 2nd Degree Black Belt (NiDan) in Judo and is a USA Judo certified national coach, trained in the American Judo System under Travis Stevens, Jimmy Pedro, and Steve Cohen. He is joined by David Boucher (NiDan, trained in France), Jordan Riel (Shodan, USA Judo certified regional coach), Tim Cruff (Yodan — 4th Degree Black Belt, Dojo Advisor), and Ally Wanner and Justin Breitwieser as assistant instructors.
We train adults and youth with a curriculum rooted in authentic Kodokan Judo and Japanese Jujitsu, guided by the philosophy that "there are no shortcuts, because there is no end." All of our instructors hold Safe Sport certification, and our academy maintains full USA Judo membership in good standing. Whether you are new to grappling arts or an experienced practitioner, Red River Judo is a place where serious training meets genuine community.

Reviews
Red River Judo is an outstanding place for both beginners and experienced students. Sensei Steve has a unique gift for making everyone feel welcome the moment they walk through the door. He creates an inclusive, respectful environment where kids are not only engaged but also challenged in meaningful ways that build confidence and discipline. His teaching style blends technical expertise with patience and encouragement, making classes both structured and fun. It’s clear that Sensei Steve cares deeply about each student’s growth on and off the mat. Highly recommended for families and individuals looking for a supportive, professional, and inspiring dojo.
Excellent place to learn judo or martial arts! Excellent instructors! Highly recommend!
I went to a judo seminar at Red River Judo - being a jiujitsu person I was a little nervous (bjj purple belt, but never had a judo class). All the people were SO welcoming, friendly and helpful. The seminar was incredible and I had a wonderful time. I would highly recommend Red River Judo for a safe, family-friendly, and high-level place to train (I mean, the seminar was with Shintaro Higashi, for goodness sakes!) I'm a small lady, and felt super safe and welcomed. Great place!!
The instructors are friendly, knowledgeable, and great with kids.
