My children have been going here for over 4 years and I finally decided to join in. Just finished a 5-week women’s jiu jitsu course and loved it. I came in as a beginner and felt welcomed and supported from day one. The instruction was clear, challenging, and confidence-building, with a strong focus on real self-defense. Training with other women made it even better. I’m definitely continuing — highly recommend if you’ve been thinking about trying jiu jitsu!

I joined Open Mat for their women’s beginner 5 week program. I went in a little nervous. This was one of the best decisions I could have made for myself. I enjoyed every class. Coach Brandon was great. Made it easy to understand and follow. Completing this program gave me confidence to want to continue with Jiu jitsu.

Before the 5-week women’s beginner BJJ program, I’ve tried out a fundamentals class at a different academy in the bay a few years ago, but I felt so lost doing it, thus I thought it wasn’t for me so I went back to playing other sports. However, I’ve watched my husband train at Open Mat for a while now, and it took me some time to build the confidence to finally try BJJ again — especially after having knee surgery. This women’s program made me feel comfortable, supported, and confident as this group of ladies was so fun and motivating, and the coaching was also superb— coach Brandon broke everything down clearly and he also incorporated some self-defense techniques, with great support from Jasmine and Yadi. The academy is very family-oriented and they also have a workout gym, recovery spaces, and delicious acai bowls. I highly recommend this program/academy and I would definitely consider continuing classes if it fits my schedule in the new year!

If you want to learn self defense, this is the place! I had seen the advertisement on Instagram for the women’s 5 weeks beginners classes. At first I was nervous but coach Brandon and Jasmine made me feel comfortable learning and belonging in the class. I left feeling excited for the next class! I met a bunch of ladies and made new friends. I finished class famished and had the ‘black belt’ açaí bowl made by Kiana, it was so yummy and replenished me! Can’t wait to continue my jiujitsu journey!!

Frequently Asked Questions

IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?

Absolutely. We invite all prospective students to try their first class free at Open Mat Academy. It's the best way to experience our training environment, meet our coaches, and see if BJJ is right for you. No experience or equipment needed — comfortable athletic clothing is fine.

DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE TO START?

No experience necessary! Open Mat Academy welcomes complete beginners. Our instructors break down every technique step by step, and our community is known for being welcoming and patient with new students. Everyone starts as a white belt, and that's exactly where you should start too.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?

For your first visit, comfortable athletic clothing works perfectly — a t-shirt and shorts or athletic pants. Once you commit to training regularly, you'll want to invest in a gi (kimono). Our coaches can recommend quality options at a range of price points.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN?

Most students at Open Mat Academy train 2 to 3 times per week and see consistent progress. Showing up regularly matters far more than training intensely once in a while. We offer multiple class times throughout the week so you can find a schedule that fits your life.

DO YOU OFFER CLASSES FOR KIDS?

Yes! We offer dedicated programs for children and teens at Open Mat Academy. Our youth classes focus on discipline, respect, confidence-building, and the fundamentals of BJJ in a safe, fun environment.
