About Mission Hills Martial Arts

At Mission Hills Martial Arts, we believe martial arts training should go beyond punches and kicks — it should build confidence, discipline, and real-world skill. Our programs are designed for students of all ages and experience levels. Whether you’re 5 or 85, you’ll gain strength, focus and the ability to protect yourself and your loved ones. We decided to open this studio to create something special — a community where every class leaves you feeling stronger, safer, and more confident than when you walked in. Most schools sell techniques. We are offering something different: A place where people can become steady and in a world that feels chaotic for a lot of people right now, that is incredibly valuable.

Nathan Carlen is one of the most experienced martial arts instructors I’ve trained with. He has a great ability to break down techniques for all ages and skill levels in a way that’s easy to understand. His teaching is practical and focused on real-world self-defense, while also building confidence and improving overall fitness. Highly recommend him to anyone looking to train.

Master Carlen is an incredible martial artist and phenomenal instructor. Very clear in his instructions, patient, and able to adapt to individual needs. The practical skills he teaches are literally life saving. I have studied several martial arts throughout my life and can say with absolute confidence he is one of the best instructors I have ever had the honor of training under.

Frequently Asked Questions

IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?

Absolutely. We invite all prospective students to try their first class free at Mission Hills Martial Arts. It's the best way to experience our training environment, meet our coaches, and see if BJJ is right for you. No experience or equipment needed — comfortable athletic clothing is fine.

DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE TO START?

No experience necessary! Mission Hills Martial Arts welcomes complete beginners. Our instructors break down every technique step by step, and our community is known for being welcoming and patient with new students. Everyone starts as a white belt, and that's exactly where you should start too.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?

For your first visit, comfortable athletic clothing works perfectly — a t-shirt and shorts or athletic pants. Once you commit to training regularly, you'll want to invest in a gi (kimono). Our coaches can recommend quality options at a range of price points.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN?

Most students at Mission Hills Martial Arts train 2 to 3 times per week and see consistent progress. Showing up regularly matters far more than training intensely once in a while. We offer multiple class times throughout the week so you can find a schedule that fits your life.

DO YOU OFFER CLASSES FOR KIDS?

Yes! We offer dedicated programs for children and teens at Mission Hills Martial Arts. Our youth classes focus on discipline, respect, confidence-building, and the fundamentals of BJJ in a safe, fun environment.
