I can’t say enough great things about Independent Martial Arts. The instructors here are knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely invested in helping every student succeed—whether you’re brand new or have years of experience. The atmosphere is welcoming, encouraging, and focused on real growth, both inside and out of the dojo. The training is top-notch, with clear instruction and thoughtful progression that builds confidence and skill. Classes are always well-structured, fun, and challenging in the best way. You can tell the team truly cares about the community they’re building. If you’re looking for a martial arts school in the Nashua area that combines high-level training with a supportive, family-like environment, this is the place. Highly recommend!

This is a truly special martial arts studio. They don’t just teach martial arts - they teach integrity, self-discipline, respect, and strong family values. My niece and nephew have been training here for years - and the growth I’ve seen in them is incredible. The level of self-respect and respect for others they demonstrate is beyond their years. It’s clear that character development is just as important here as physical skill. If you’re looking for a studio that excels in its craft while also prioritizing values, integrity, and leadership - this is the place. Highly recommend!

I grew up in Nashua and have known IMAS students and alumni my entire life. They are doing something amazing over there. IMAS produces strong, confident, genuinely good citizens. They show discipline, personal responsibility, and focus. IMAS also demonstrates through action what it means to be a member of a community. If you have children who can benefit, send them. If you're an adult who can use some of that in your life? Show up. Because they do.

I can’t say enough good things about IMAS. I was an active student of Chris Marsh and Mike Susalka for 14 years before I had to move to a different part of the country. They are good men and taught me how to be one too. I can’t think of a better environment for children to develop their physical fitness, confidence, and character.

Being part of Independent Martial Arts has meant so much to me. It’s one of the most welcoming and kind environments I’ve ever been in. The support, encouragement, and sense of community have helped me grow not only physically, but mentally. I’m so grateful to be part of the IMAS family.

Frequently Asked Questions

IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS AT INDEPENDENT MARTIAL ARTS SCHOOL?

Yes — we invite all newcomers to try their first class at no cost. Come in comfortable athletic clothing; no experience or equipment needed. Just show up and we'll take care of the rest.

DO I NEED ANY MARTIAL ARTS EXPERIENCE TO START BJJ?

Absolutely not. Independent Martial Arts School welcomes complete beginners every week. Our instructors are skilled at meeting students where they are and building foundational technique from the ground up. The first few months are focused entirely on core concepts.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?

For your first visit, athletic shorts and a rash guard or fitted t-shirt work perfectly. Once you decide to train regularly, we'll help you select a gi (the traditional BJJ uniform). We provide all training equipment for new students.

HOW MANY DAYS PER WEEK SHOULD I TRAIN AT INDEPENDENT MARTIAL ARTS SCHOOL?

Most students make strong progress training 2–3 times per week. Our class schedule in New Hampshire gives you the flexibility to fit BJJ around work, family, and other commitments. Consistency matters more than volume, especially early on.

DO YOU OFFER CLASSES FOR KIDS AND TEENS?

Yes. We run structured youth programs for children and teens with age-appropriate curriculum. Kids develop discipline, confidence, and real self-defense skills in a fun, safe environment. Classes are kept separate from adult training.
