I can’t say enough good things about Carlson Gracie Grand Rapids. The coaches are knowledgeable, patient, and truly invested in helping everyone get better — no ego, no pressure, just solid training. The owners are honestly some of the best people you’ll meet. They run the gym with integrity and create an environment where you feel welcomed from day one. The community here is supportive, the classes are well thought out, and the culture is exactly what you want in a BJJ academy. Whether you’re brand new or have been training for years, this is the kind of place that helps you grow and keeps you excited to come back. Highly recommend checking it out.

I just completed the two week BJJ trial as a complete beginner and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Everyone is kind, welcoming, encouraging. The instructors are patient and will always answer your questions. Definitely recommend!

Our son started about three months ago. We have seen such an improvement with his self confidence and they have created a sense of community at Carlson Gracie. The coach is so patient with the kids.

Son is finishing his first couple of weeks in the youth clases, and it’s been pretty good. We intend to keep going for sometime. First and foremost, I love what a workout the youth classes are and that there are different lengths of class through the week. Additionally the balance of conditioning, technique drilling, and rolling is pretty good, but can be a lot for a beginning without good fundamentals. I believe the coaches care. The gym does some fun things including popsicles after class, a Christmas party, and letting parents workout while kid is training. Def worth giving a try, and I think the owners are receptive to feedback which means the place should keep improving.

Frequently Asked Questions

DO I NEED EXPERIENCE TO START TRAINING BJJ?

Not at all! Grbjj welcomes complete beginners. We offer introductory classes specifically designed to teach the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a safe, supportive environment. Everyone starts somewhere, and our coaches will guide you every step of the way.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?

For your first visit, comfortable athletic wear such as shorts and a rash guard works perfectly. Once you train regularly, you'll want a gi (BJJ uniform). We train gi here — our coaches can point you to the right gear.

IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?

Yes! We encourage you to try a class before committing. Contact Grbjj to schedule your complimentary intro class and experience our training environment for yourself.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN AS A BEGINNER?

Most beginners see strong progress training 2-3 times per week. Consistency matters more than volume early on. As your conditioning improves, many students increase to 4-5 sessions per week.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET A BLUE BELT IN BJJ?

On average, dedicated students earn their blue belt in 1-2 years of consistent training. BJJ progression depends on mat time, active learning, and open rolling. Each stripe reflects real skill growth.
