About Gracie Jiu Jitsu Vermont (Essex Junction VT)

At Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Vermont, we bring Royce Gracie-lineage jiu-jitsu to Essex Junction, Vermont under the instruction of Seth Shamp, a black belt under the legendary Royce Gracie. Seth brings a wealth of knowledge, talent, and experience developed over decades of training, creating a learning environment suitable for all age ranges and experience levels.

Our curriculum reflects the complete Gracie Jiu-Jitsu system — encompassing grappling, striking, takedowns, and throws — paired with a genuine lifestyle philosophy. As Royce Gracie has taught, "Jiu-Jitsu is not the art of hitting, it's the art of not getting hit." We train students to handle real-world confrontation with calm, technical precision rather than brute force.

Located at 90 Center Road in Essex Junction, we serve the greater Burlington area with a full schedule of adult and children's group classes, private lessons, a weekly women's class, and open mat on Saturdays. Our close-knit community embodies the respect and mutual growth at the heart of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Our son has been attending Gracie Vermont since he was 3. I have sung Seth’s praises high and to everyone who asks - Seth is truly talented not only in the art of what he does but in transferring that wisdom, practice and sense of belonging to kids. My son looks forward to every class and looks up to Seth as a role model. I cannot recommend this place enough. It’s not just grappling, it’s morals, philosophy, confidence and a sense of belonging and growing. I’m so glad my son has Seth and jiu jitsu in his life! If you’ve been wondering if you should have your kid try it out, here’s your sign!

My daughter started at Gracie a little over a year ago and the tremendous improvement in her confidence and physical and emotional skills a testament to Seth's teaching ability. He is gentle but firm and the kids have so much respect for him. I cannot recommend Gracie enough if you are considering jiu jitsu for yourself, your kids, or the whole family!

From the first day I stepped on the mat I knew that the community at Gracie Jiu Jitsu Vermont was one I wanted to be apart of. Entering a martial arts space was an incredibly intimidating idea for me for a long time, until I was invited in by an existing Gracie Vermont community member. What a gift that was. Seth Shamp is a natural educator, patient and professional instructor. He creates a space where all identities feel welcome and looks to ensure that all folks who walk into the space feel supported and appreciated. Each session there is an unwavering commitment to safety, respect, and trust between all folks who step on the mat. I highly recommend Gracie Jiu Jitsu Vermont to folks who are seeking community as well as a dynamic mental and physical experience. Let this review be a genuine invitation to you from an existing Gracie Jiu Jitsu Vermont community member :)

My 5y/o son has been at Gracie Jiu Jitsu learning under Seth coming up on 2 years this January. Really can’t say enough good about Gracie Vermont. Seth is incredible with kids of all abilities. Our family is grateful for the impact he, and Jiu Jitsu has on our boy. We intend to come here for years to come.
