Reviews
Disclaimer: I should have left this review sooner, I have trained at Gracie Barra Melbourne just over two years now, and I have visited ~8 other gyms. Melbourne Gracie Barra is a fantastic gym to train at. They have beginner friendly classes for those who are hesitant/fearful to come for a first class (I know I was), to advanced and competition classes for those trying to push their limits to get ready to compete. Professor Bernardo and Michelle focus on skill training merged with a respectful and safe environment. I highly recommend anyone to come try this school for one class and know you will want to become a part of this family.
Professor Bernardo and Coach Michelle are excellent instructors. They foster a friendly, supportive environment for all of their students and are especially great with kids. Their ability to connect with younger students while maintaining a high level of instruction really stands out. I also greatly appreciate the flexibility of being able to visit any GB location when traveling, which makes it easy to stay consistent with training.
Training at Gracie Barra Melbourne has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. From the moment you step on the mat, you can feel the energy — welcoming, humble, and focused. It doesn’t matter if you’re brand new or a higher belt, everyone trains hard and helps each other level up. There’s zero ego, zero machismo — just people sharpening their skills and themselves. The culture here is what really sets it apart. Between tough rounds on the mat, beach hangs, and BBQs, it feels less like a gym and more like a tribe. You show up ready to learn, sweat, and grow, and you’re part of it. I’ve gained real confidence in my self-defense, but more than that, I’ve grown mentally and physically. If you’re looking for community, discipline, confidence, and the kind of training that makes you better inside and outside the gym — this is the place.
Professor Brenardo, Professor Leo, Coach Michelle, and Coach Luis are the best! My son has been a student for 3 years and we absolutely love the skills and abilities. We started learning Jui jitsu when my son was being bullied at school. We no longer have any problem with bullies.
Me and my family started in February, I have been to a couple of different Jujistu gyms and did not feel welcomed. I felt like I was an outcast. However, when we came here for the first class we were welcomed so warmly. Coach Michelle and Professor Bernardo are exceptional trainers for my 4 year old daughter and very patient. I attend the women’s class and has helped me tremendously with self confidence and a much needed mental health break from the business of life. I am so glad to have found a wonderful community!!
Frequently Asked Questions
IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?
Absolutely. We invite all prospective students to try their first class free at GB Melbourne. It's the best way to experience our training environment, meet our coaches, and see if BJJ is right for you. No experience or equipment needed — comfortable athletic clothing is fine.
DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE TO START?
No experience necessary! GB Melbourne welcomes complete beginners. Our instructors break down every technique step by step, and our community is known for being welcoming and patient with new students. Everyone starts as a white belt, and that's exactly where you should start too.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?
For your first visit, comfortable athletic clothing works perfectly — a t-shirt and shorts or athletic pants. Once you commit to training regularly, you'll want to invest in a gi (kimono). Our coaches can recommend quality options at a range of price points.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN?
Most students at GB Melbourne train 2 to 3 times per week and see consistent progress. Showing up regularly matters far more than training intensely once in a while. We offer multiple class times throughout the week so you can find a schedule that fits your life.
DO YOU OFFER CLASSES FOR KIDS?
We primarily serve adult students. Please contact us directly to ask about availability for younger students — we're happy to point you in the right direction.
