About Garcia Jiu-Jitsu

Garcia Jiu-Jitsu is based in Genesee County, Michigan and was founded in 2015 by Professor Andre Garcia, a black belt with over twenty years of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Professor Garcia has trained under notable figures including Andre Galvao and members of the Gracie family, and the school now serves over one hundred students ranging from children and teens to adults and professional fighters. The gym also features Professor Buddy Clinton, a fifth-degree black belt under Royce Gracie and a former professional MMA competitor with a 10-5 record.

Beyond Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the gym offers instruction in Muay Thai and has instructors with backgrounds in Russian Sambo and MMA. The school's motto — Hard Work, Discipline, Progress — reflects the values that define training on its mats. Garcia Jiu-Jitsu openly welcomes any and all individuals, from business professionals to competitive fighters to children, and prioritizes an enjoyable and safe environment for everyone who trains there. The gym can be reached at garciajiujitsu810@gmail.com.

I can’t say enough about Great Lakes!! The family atmosphere here is unbelievable. From the moment we walked in, we were treated like family. The skill level of all the coaches has transformed my kids dramatically. They make it very affordable for a family to train here. We do both BJJ and kickboxing throughout the week. It’s becoming our second home and we plan on being here forever!!

Such a welcoming environment and family friendly! My son and daughter love it at Great Lakes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. They always leave smiling, and have made some great friends. After seeing how much they enjoyed it I decided to try the adult beginners class. It was a great way to be introduced to the sport, and now I participate in the gi and no gi classes. The combat conditioning class is also wonderful and a great workout. As someone with no martial arts experience, I have felt welcomed and challenged which is exactly what I was looking for. All the coaches are wonderful to work with. There have been many other women in the evening classes in different stages of their training, and the more advanced belts have always been helpful to me as a beginner. Everyone I have trained with has been respectful and kind. Their schedule allows you and your family to get the most out of an evening of training. They even offer a homeschool class, which is amazing as a homeschool family. During this class I utilize the gym downstairs while my kids train upstairs, and we all leave happy and tired. Give it a try, you won’t regret it!

The classes are challenging but awsome, the environment is welcoming and motivating, and you can really see improvement in everyone that goes there. If you are looking for an awesome place to learn Jiu Jitsu, look no further! Kelly is wonderful with my daughter, carefully explaining moves. As a matter of fact, so is Adam and all the other instructors there, each one is great at helping! Additionally, my daughter is enjoying the kick boxing as well. Super friendly and family oriented, you just can't choose a better place to learn and practice!

Before we tried out Great Lakes we had 4 or 5 other people recommend it to us. After our free trial week our oldest was hooked and his brother was soon to follow. Instructors do a wonderful job meeting the students where they are at and making Great Lakes the place to be for training, for competition and for beginners. The owners are heavily involved in the different levels of instruction as well which we love! 6Stars!!

Frequently Asked Questions

DO I NEED EXPERIENCE TO START TRAINING BJJ?

Not at all! Garcia Jiu-Jitsu welcomes complete beginners. We offer introductory classes specifically designed to teach the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a safe, supportive environment. Everyone starts somewhere, and our coaches will guide you every step of the way.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?

For your first visit, comfortable athletic wear such as shorts and a rash guard works perfectly. Once you train regularly, you'll want a gi (BJJ uniform). We train gi here — our coaches can point you to the right gear.

IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?

Yes! We encourage you to try a class before committing. Contact Garcia Jiu-Jitsu to schedule your complimentary intro class and experience our training environment for yourself.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN AS A BEGINNER?

Most beginners see strong progress training 2-3 times per week. Consistency matters more than volume early on. As your conditioning improves, many students increase to 4-5 sessions per week.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET A BLUE BELT IN BJJ?

On average, dedicated students earn their blue belt in 1-2 years of consistent training. BJJ progression depends on mat time, active learning, and open rolling. Each stripe reflects real skill growth.
