My training partners always recommended this school for their great atmosphere, super knowledgeable staff and students and Saturday open mats. I was lucky enough to make it to their first women’s open mat and it was an awesome time! The ladies running the event did so in such an organized way, set ground rules so everyone at every level felt comfortable, and even had some raffles! But outside of this event, the students and staff here were all extremely welcoming, very good at jiu jitsu and it was an overall 20/10 experience. I can’t wait to come back and train again with these amazing people!

Masterskya is a great place to learn Jiu-jitsu and connect with a wonderful community! The instruction is top notch for beginners and professionals. Very innovative gym that likes to try out new techniques, ways of practice, and environments. Alex is a great teacher and leader. The culture is open and friendly and I learned a lot from everyone at this gym.

As a black belt who’s had the pleasure of knowing Alex for years, I can confidently say he’s built something special at Masterskaya. He’s charismatic, an excellent teacher, and has created an environment that encourages learning and community. The students and teammates are welcoming, positive, and bring great energy to training. All around good vibes. Bonus points for the awesome food spots nearby too. Highly recommend training here.

Been training at Masterskya’s for years now. The space is friendly for all levels of practitioners, day 1 and beyond. There’s plenty of options for classes and variations of sessions that help improve your game. The environment is unlike any gym I’ve attended. The staff and instructors are very supportive, hands on, and expert in how they support their students, whether they are competing or not. If you’re in NYC, don’t miss out training at Masterskya’s, the gem of Canal street.

Frequently Asked Questions

DO I NEED EXPERIENCE TO START TRAINING BJJ?

Not at all! Fighthouse Systema NYC welcomes complete beginners. We offer introductory classes specifically designed to teach the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a safe, supportive environment. Everyone starts somewhere, and our coaches will guide you every step of the way.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?

For your first visit, comfortable athletic wear such as shorts and a rash guard works perfectly. Once you train regularly, you'll want a gi (BJJ uniform). We train gi here — our coaches can point you toward the right gear.

IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?

Yes! We encourage you to try a class before committing. Contact Fighthouse Systema NYC to schedule your complimentary intro class and experience our training environment for yourself.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN AS A BEGINNER?

Most beginners see strong progress training 2-3 times per week. Consistency matters more than volume early on. As your conditioning improves, many students increase to 4-5 sessions per week.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET A BLUE BELT IN BJJ?

On average, dedicated students earn their blue belt in 1-2 years of consistent training. Progression depends on mat time, active learning, and open rolling. Each stripe reflects real skill growth.
