About Clockwork Jiu Jitsu

Clockwork Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is located on the second floor of 650 Broadway in NoHo, Manhattan, between Bond Street and Bleecker Street. The academy is led by Head Instructor Josh Griffiths, a 4th Degree Black Belt who began training during his engineering studies at Stevens Institute of Technology and received his black belt from UFC fighter Kenny Florian in 2007. Griffiths has competed at the Pan American Championship, North Abu Dhabi Pro Trials, Grappler's Quest, and Copa Atlantica.

Clockwork offers Adult classes for all levels, a Kids program, Private Training, and a 4-week BJJ Bootcamp for beginners that includes eight classes and a new uniform. The academy is built around a "no ego" culture — its core philosophy holds that technique conquers strength, and the environment prioritizes respect and community over competition pressure. The gym has earned over 330 five-star Google reviews, maintains clean facilities with locker rooms and showers, and offers a free trial class for new students.

We’ve had a fantastic experience at Clockwork Jiu Jitsu! The instructors are patient, skilled, and amazing with kids. They create a supportive environment while teaching real technique and discipline. The space is big and well-organized, which makes training comfortable and safe. We’ve seen great growth in our child’s confidence and focus since starting here. Highly recommend!

Clockwork is an awesome place to train. Super friendly, ego-free environment and really high-level instruction that’s easy to follow and apply. The dojo is always spotless, which I really appreciate. Huge shoutout to the head instructor Josh. He’s always present, hands-on, and genuinely invested in everyone’s progress. You can tell he cares. Highly recommend.

I’ve been training jiu jitsu for 11 years at different gyms around NYC. For most of those 11 years I’ve been looking for a gym with the right vibe, solid training and patient instructors, not to mention a location that doesn’t require two trains and a bus to reach. After a month training at Clockwork, I can confidently say I’ve found my gym. Josh, Ray, Shai and the other instructors at Clockwork make it a point to set a positive vibe for the school, and this is reflected in all the students I’ve met and rolled with. The positive vibe means greater student retention, which means lots of good rolls, whether you’re starting as a white belt or are more experienced and looking to challenge yourself with lots of solid upper belts. The school is especially well-organized with a curriculum for new students looking to learn the basics, which is something lacking at many schools. If you’re looking for a BJJ school where the instructors and students genuinely seem happy to be there, come check

Had a great experience in the 4-week BJJ bootcamp. Josh, Rowan and Ray provided clear instruction, and by sparring with instructors, we got a sense for why each aspect of the technique was important. Looking forward to continuing training here.

I looked up lots of different gyms when I decided to try Jiu Jitsu for the first time. I’d always found the idea intimidating, and so I knew the vibe of the gym would be my #1 deciding factor. Reading through Clockwork’s About page— words that stood out to me were ‘welcome’, ‘supportive community’, ‘ego-free’, and ‘patience’. Not only did Clockwork deliver on all of these, but the instructors demonstrated right away how experienced and knowledgeable they are. Each will graciously answer any questions you might have. I attended a trial class (my first martial arts class ever) and knew I was in the right place. I haven’t even thought of trying another gym since. I highly recommend their 4-week Beginner Bootcamp, which I attended last month. It helped me build a foundation as well as friendships within Clockwork’s already welcoming community!

Frequently Asked Questions

DO I NEED EXPERIENCE TO START TRAINING BJJ?

Not at all! Clockwork Jiu Jitsu welcomes complete beginners. We offer introductory classes specifically designed to teach the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a safe, supportive environment. Everyone starts somewhere, and our coaches will guide you every step of the way.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?

For your first visit, comfortable athletic wear such as shorts and a rash guard works perfectly. Once you train regularly, you'll want a gi (BJJ uniform). We train gi here — our coaches can point you toward the right gear.

IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?

Yes! We encourage you to try a class before committing. Contact Clockwork Jiu Jitsu to schedule your complimentary intro class and experience our training environment for yourself.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN AS A BEGINNER?

Most beginners see strong progress training 2-3 times per week. Consistency matters more than volume early on. As your conditioning improves, many students increase to 4-5 sessions per week.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET A BLUE BELT IN BJJ?

On average, dedicated students earn their blue belt in 1-2 years of consistent training. Progression depends on mat time, active learning, and open rolling. Each stripe reflects real skill growth.
