Reviews
Clean place to train and super convenient location. We just started in the kids class and our six year old is having a blast. The instructor / owner Mr. Swafford is a master of his craft. Classes are fun for the kids and it also feels like the instructor is a little harder on the kids than most places (thank God, with society these days kids need discipline). The second best part about this place is they also have another biz that sells super fresh beef. Beef where the cows were humanly raised and fed right. I’ll never have a better smash burger than the one we bought from these guys!
I dropped in for their am open mat while traveling in the area. Super strong BJJ at all belt levels. I was pushed and never felt unsafe due to spazzy or head-hunted for being a drop-in. Friendly and respectful and so much talent.
I came for a class because I was in town on a work trip and I do jujitsu, but a different kind than here. Mickey was welcoming and I watched him end the kids class. He has a great attitude with the kids. Josh, a brown belt, taught the adults class. He did great. Everyone was welcoming and friendly, and I felt safe training there.
I have experience with both the adult classes and kids classes: Excellent kids classes that reinforce positive behavior and attitudes both on the mat and at home. As an adult my desire to participate was initially focused on the actual training and learning of BJJ. However, quickly my desire to attend class (while I am still excited to train and learn) is predicated on being involved in a positive and healthy community that is encouraging and helpful. The gym is "newbie" accessible and easy. I have had zero negative interactions- which is rare in even the best of places. If you are looking for a place to train jiu jitsu- you will find exactly what you're looking for. If you're looking for a place to belong and find community- you will find it and it will be easy. If you want both- jackpot!
The environment here is super laid back, very chill and not pushy at all. The students have been extremely hospitable during my time training here as well as the professor, Mickey. The colored belts represent themselves and their skill level well with a methodical controlled jiu jitsu. There is a large variety of ranks present which gives a good variety of training. Looking forward to more time on the mats with these guys.
Frequently Asked Questions
IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?
Absolutely. We invite all prospective students to try their first class free at CHATTANOOGA JIU-JITSU ACADEMY. It's the best way to experience our training environment, meet our coaches, and see if BJJ is right for you. No experience or equipment needed — comfortable athletic clothing is fine.
DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE TO START?
No experience necessary! CHATTANOOGA JIU-JITSU ACADEMY welcomes complete beginners. Our instructors break down every technique step by step, and our community is known for being welcoming and patient with new students. Everyone starts as a white belt, and that's exactly where you should start too.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?
For your first visit, comfortable athletic clothing works perfectly — a t-shirt and shorts or athletic pants. Once you commit to training regularly, you'll want to invest in a gi (kimono). Our coaches can recommend quality options at a range of price points.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN?
Most students at CHATTANOOGA JIU-JITSU ACADEMY train 2 to 3 times per week and see consistent progress. Showing up regularly matters far more than training intensely once in a while. We offer multiple class times throughout the week so you can find a schedule that fits your life.
DO YOU OFFER CLASSES FOR KIDS?
Yes! We offer dedicated programs for children and teens at CHATTANOOGA JIU-JITSU ACADEMY. Our youth classes focus on discipline, respect, confidence-building, and the fundamentals of BJJ in a safe, fun environment.
