About Bowman Systems MMA

At Bowman Systems MMA in Frankford, Delaware, we focus on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a complete self-defense system rather than an abstract sport. Operating out of Sussex County at 34615 Wilgus Cemetery Road, we run a technically demanding BJJ program under the lineage of Grandmaster Relson Gracie, taught by Professor James Thrift — a black belt with over twenty years of protective government experience.

Professor Thrift brings a no-nonsense perspective to BJJ instruction: every technique must work in real-world conditions, not just in competition. This philosophy drives our curriculum, which emphasizes practical takedowns, clinch work, ground control, and submission finishing from positions students might actually find themselves in. Alongside BJJ, we offer Muay Thai, boxing, and a specialized Parkinson's Boxing program that serves the broader community.

Bowman Systems MMA is a family-friendly gym with serious instruction. Owner Noel Bowman and the coaching staff are committed to developing students who are capable, confident, and prepared — both on the mat and off it. Sussex County's premier self-defense resource is right here in Frankford.

Noel and Chelsea run a great business here. Personal training is my experience and Chelsea is wonderful with older clients (I'm 68), as is Noel. The videos I see of martial training look fun and engaging. Very nice people. Recommended!💯!!

Awesome instructors, great gym! Found Bowman Systems in 2018 when I was looking to drop in on a BJJ class during my summer vacation. I had a great time in class, learned some really great techniques and got in some really terrific rolls! Noel and his instructors are really friendly, knowledgeable and you feel welcomed from the very start. Great location with easy parking not too far from the beach! I’ll be dropping in whenever I’m in town!!!

I trained years ago inconsistently as a white belt back in Baltimore. Sparring and doing basic drills at Bowman Systems MMA definitely sparked an excitement about Jiu Jitsu I haven’t had in a long time. I highly recommend not just yearly residents but seasonal vacationers who are interested in a great workout with a fun and spirited vibe. I’d be happy to return again when we’re back in the area.
