I've been attending this academy for just over a year and I am thrilled with the coaches, instruction, and classroom culture. As a woman it can be tough getting into combat sports but this place make it easy and this school has the highest contingent of women attending out of any in the area. Everyone has been extremely supportive and I look forward to going to class every day and am always trying to attend as much as possible. It's hard but extremely rewarding. Jiu jitsu is for everyone!

Dropped in for an open mat while visiting the area. Kevin was amazingly warm and welcoming. The gym has a fantastic vibe. His students were very cool and super tough and technical. I’ve visited a lot of schools in a lot of places and run one of my own in Atlanta. I can tell you from experience, Kevin had built something special in Asbury Park. Check them out if you’re looking for a school that’s the total package!

I first came to this gym with no experience and didn’t know what to expect but this gym has exceeded any expectations I could have ever had. As a young female i was fully included by both all the men and women in the gym and have never felt more at home, more safe, and more part of the family they have there. The owners and all the instructors go out of their way to make sure each person is comfortable and are extremely open to feedback, taking the time to go through certain moves if I, or someone else, is struggling with it, and make it known that each person no matter how long they have been, or their belt color, that they are just as much apart of this team/family. Absolutely love this gym!!

If you’re looking for a gym where you’ll be welcomed right off the bat and fit into a group (more like a family) of people who genuinely want to help out and teach you a realistic sport this is the spot for you. Zero politics gym with a great group of people, perfect for all skill levels.

Dropped in for a 6am class with Justin Smith while visiting Asbury Park & had a great experience. The APJJ team is both a welcoming & challenging squad to roll with. They provided a clean, safe, & spacious environment to train in. Looking forward to dropping in again in the future. Would HIGHLY recommend to visitors, parents, or anyone just looking to try BJJ for the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions

IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?

Absolutely. We invite all prospective students to try their first class free at Asbury Park Jiu Jitsu. It's the best way to experience our training environment, meet our coaches, and see if BJJ is right for you. No experience or equipment needed — comfortable athletic clothing is fine.

DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE TO START?

No experience necessary! Asbury Park Jiu Jitsu welcomes complete beginners. Our instructors break down every technique step by step, and our community is known for being welcoming and patient with new students. Everyone starts as a white belt, and that's exactly where you should start too.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?

For your first visit, comfortable athletic clothing works perfectly — a t-shirt and shorts or athletic pants. Once you commit to training regularly, you'll want to invest in a gi (kimono). Our coaches can recommend quality options at a range of price points.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN?

Most students at Asbury Park Jiu Jitsu train 2 to 3 times per week and see consistent progress. Showing up regularly matters far more than training intensely once in a while. We offer multiple class times throughout the week so you can find a schedule that fits your life.

DO YOU OFFER CLASSES FOR KIDS?

Yes! We offer dedicated programs for children and teens at Asbury Park Jiu Jitsu. Our youth classes focus on discipline, respect, confidence-building, and the fundamentals of BJJ in a safe, fun environment.
