Reviews
I was visiting a friend in Southfield and stopped in Wednesday night for the evening Gi class, taught by Byron Barnard. First and foremost, the atmosphere was extremely welcoming. The gym was clean, staff helpful, and everyone on the mats was super friendly. Everyone was really good at Jiu Jitsu as well. The class itself was great. Byron is an excellent instructor. Clear, concise instruction, layered detail, and was really helpful during the drilling portions, taking time to address everyone as needed. Would highly recommend anyone in the area checking 313 out. Thank you guys for having me down there.
I trained a handful of times at this gym in August of this year. Friendly and welcoming group of guys/gals, and more importantly tough group of practitioners. This gym trains at pretty high/ intense level but it’s also a safe environment. Coach Zach and Byron were awesome. If you’re in the area I highly recommend visiting this gym.
I’m a 38 year old female starting Jiu Jitsu for my first time. Been going for several months now. Not knowing what I was getting into, I have felt very welcomed and comfortable at 313 BJJ. It is very clean and well maintained. Outstanding coaches. Mamoon is great and Fabio is very patient and detailed. I highly recommend coming to 313 and we need more women 😊
Traveled to Detroit for work and dropped into 313 BJJ and it was a warm welcoming environment. Got my butt kicked by a BB in the Gi and got to train no Gi as well. This gym has a strong BJJ gym culture 10/10 recommend.
I am a beginner who trains at a academy north of the city close to my home, but work downtown. I decided to drop in for some training at an afternoon class at 313 BJJ. I was very impressed. Professor Lima gave some great instruction on shoulder lock sequences from half-guard. It was followed by some very challenging sparing. Lima's students are being very well served by him and are very good. The facilities are also top notch, very clean, and very modern looking (but with some old Detroit charm) with multiple showers (with soap and shampoo provided, which saves you the big hassle of bringing and storing your own in your gear bag -little thing but big plus imho) nice locker room, and multiple restrooms that are separate from the showers. Look forward to dropping in again. Would recommend to anyone who lives or works in the Motor City.
Frequently Asked Questions
DO I NEED EXPERIENCE TO START TRAINING BJJ?
Not at all! 313 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu welcomes complete beginners. We offer introductory classes specifically designed to teach the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a safe, supportive environment. Everyone starts somewhere, and our coaches will guide you every step of the way.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY FIRST CLASS?
For your first visit, comfortable athletic wear such as shorts and a rash guard works perfectly. Once you train regularly, you'll want a gi (BJJ uniform). We train gi here — our coaches can point you to the right gear.
IS THERE A FREE TRIAL CLASS?
Yes! We encourage you to try a class before committing. Contact 313 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to schedule your complimentary intro class and experience our training environment for yourself.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRAIN AS A BEGINNER?
Most beginners see strong progress training 2-3 times per week. Consistency matters more than volume early on. As your conditioning improves, many students increase to 4-5 sessions per week.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET A BLUE BELT IN BJJ?
On average, dedicated students earn their blue belt in 1-2 years of consistent training. BJJ progression depends on mat time, active learning, and open rolling. Each stripe reflects real skill growth.
